My name is Timothy Baker and my brother is Benjamin Baker. We figured out that while both of us have decent vocal abilities, when we harmonize together is when the magic really happens. Collectively, we make up the core of Drunken Choir. Ben is 28, and I am 23, we both grew up in a small railroad town in South Carolina called Florence. The only reason you might have heard about it is because its a good place to stop and take a break on I-95. I could have paid a journalist/freelancer two to three hundred dollars to fill in some boilerplate band bio template, but it felt more honest to give you all the facts directly from the source; seeing as I am not illiterate and have better ways to spend three hundred dollars.
In this post Dylan world we live in, the singer/songwriter is idolized, but it wasn’t so long ago that just the simple singer was king. Frank Sinatra, my personal favorite singer, referred to himself as “a singer of popular songs.” I love that. You might say that quote is one of the main reasons I started Drunken Choir. I like to write and have written a few really good songs, but most of my efforts turn out to be mediocre. Ernest Hemingway said that to write about life you must first live it. I completely agree with that and for that reason, I only write when I honestly feel like I have something to say based on personal experience.
The basic concept of the band is to release albums that only include songs that could be singles. Every album we release, will in our eyes and ears, be a collection of the best songs ever written (whether they be our own, or from another source). If you were sitting here beside me now, I could play you 100 songs by artists that you would have never heard about otherwise. That is another reason why its so hard for me to write original material, just knowing that there are thousands of great songs that have been lost in the glut of mediocre music being forced upon us by people who ultimately have nothing to say. There will be naysayers, but I would challenge them to listen before casting judgement.
Up until this period in time, all the releases Ben and I have put out have been released as “Benjamin Baker.” I am proud of all of those records and if you were a fan of those recordings, I can assure you that you will like Drunken Choir. Right now we are working on setting up some studio time at one of the best recording studio’s here in Nashville, so we’ll keep you posted.
Cheers,
Timothy & Benjamin Baker <Drunken Choir>
